ARTIST STATEMENT

My work explores the cycles that shape the natural world and influence life. Through the series SCAPES, I consider the transformative forces of creation and growth alongside their counterparts, destruction and erosion. Organic and often dark in character, SCAPES reflects the raw power of the landscape and the forces that continually shape it.

The work began as large relief sculptures carved from layered polychrome plywood and has expanded to include two drawing series. One uses frottage printmaking techniques, while the most recent works are made with water-based inks on petroleum-based paper. These processes emphasize texture, pressure, and the transfer of surface, revealing forms that feel unearthed.

In recent years, the series has shifted toward exploring Oklahoma’s ecosystems and the region’s layered visual character. Many works investigate subterra, the hidden structures beneath the surface that support life above ground: roots, soil, water, and geological strata. Through carving, rubbing, and layering, the sculptures and drawings evoke landscapes shaped by time, pressure, and slow transformation.
